From its origins as a small village on the Tana Deli, Medan has grown to become a busy Indonesian metropolis, growing out of its shell during the mid 1800s as a result of the booming tobacco trade. Although not a tourist hub, the city has some attractions and historical sites that make it a worthy destination for those interested in Indonesian history.

The local mode of transportation, the becak is a cheaper way to get around the city. Taxis and mini-buses are also there to take visitors to other interesting locations in the metro like the Old City Hall and the iconic Tirtanadi Water Tower, both of which are examples of Dutch colonial architecture. For a short lesson on WWII history, a visit to the Bukit Barisan Military Museum which is home to a small number of weapons and other artifacts from the war is a must. For more examples of Medan’s architecture, there is the Grand Mosque, which was commissioned by the sultan in 1906 and is covered in ornate designs and carvings. Top this short tour through the architectural history of Medan with a cool refreshing drink at the Tip Top restaurant which sits just across another landmark, the Tjong A Fie Mansion, the former home of famous Chinese merchant.

Polonia International Airport is the gateway to Medan by air and sits about 5 km from the central business district. From Mumbai, passengers can fly with Cathay, Sillkair, Northwest and Malaysian Airlines, to name a few of the airlines that fly this route. Cheap flights are offered by Air Mauritius, Thai and Sri Lankan Airlines. Travel time from Delhi to Medan takes 33 hours.
