‘Casablanca Mohammed’ pertains to the Mohamed V International Airport, located within the city premises of Casablanca, Morocco. Handled by the country’s National Airports Office (ONDA), the airport is a significant access point in the Northern African region. Sustaining heavy passenger traffic at around 7 million passengers each year, it is one of the most hectic airports in Morocco, serving as the major hub for the hub of Royal Air Maroc, which is the flag carrier of the country. Other homegrown airlines such as Air Arabia Maroc, Jet4you, and Regional Air Lines also chose Mohamed V International Airport as their center. The facility is named after Sultan Mohammed V, the first king of Morocco, and operates three (3) terminals.

One interesting fact about this transport facility is that it has a long history with the United States forces. It was originally built by the Americans during the Second World War, and initially served as merely an auxiliary airfield of Anfa Airport, a facility located right in Casablanca, 30 kilometers away. Called “Berrechid Airfield” by the Americans, it served as a significant access point for the U.S. military during the dark times of war. When the WWII ended, the facility was turned over to the Moroccan government. However, the Cold War prompted another American takeover and the facility was called “Nouasseur Air Base” this time around; it was utilized by the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command, and served as the point of attack against the Soviet Union. American forces moved out of Moroccan territory in 1963.
